How Queen Stole the Show at Live Aid
To say they were nervous before they went on stage would be an understatement. Dressed in jeans, a tank top, and a studded armband Freddie Mercury set the world alight. Queen squeezed every ounce of music out of their time. They played the hits, and then they were gone. In a decade of economic liberalism, Live Aid was the antidote. Compassion for humanity by feeding the world was far more powerful than commercialism and greed. Live Aid had turned the tide, and it had a long-lasting effect on music fans worldwide; in part, it kick-started a social revolution as music fans realised that their voice could help those in need, and their actions could, in some part, change the world.
Queen were a part of that, and that legacy still shines on today. After a less than gratifying release - Hot Space, and a gruelling world tour — The Works, and the added controversy of playing Sun City in Apartheid South Africa; They planned to take the second half of 1985 off to take a break from Queen, and each other. Queen were riding high after Live Aid but they each had their own plans for the remainder of that year.
July 1973: Rehearsing for their first album Queen released their self-titled debut album in July 1973. The band recorded the album at Trident Studios mainly during downtime, as the studios were very popular. They were given free use of the equipment when the artists left. This was their second time on the hit show. They were supported by Thin Lizzy on their North American dates. They sold-out of tickets for the show at the legendary venue within a matter of moments. The band performed six nights in Japan and their final show of the tour was in Tokorozawa at the Seibu Lions Stadium.
The band headlined the first night of the very first Rock in Rio festival in 1985. The band played to an estimated 300,000 people over two nights.

More than a billion people across the globe watched the show, but the UK and the US comprised the main audience. Queen wanted to maximize their time and showcase their old tunes with new songs. They ended up with a set list that melodically combined six of their best-known hits, including an abridged "Bohemian Rhapsody.

In that way, lots of acts could be featured and the television rights, tickets and so on could raise a phenomenal amount of money. It was a game of bluff. Tony Verna , one of the inventors of instant replay , was able to secure John F. Verna designed the needed satellite schematic and became the Executive Director as well as the Co-Executive Producer along with Hal Uplinger.
Uplinger, the co-inventor of instant replay, came up with the idea to produce a four-hour video edit of Live Aid to distribute to those countries without the necessary satellite equipment to rebroadcast the live feed. The BBC would then have had to ensure those footage and sound mixes were in sync while also performing a live vision mix of the footage from both venues. The combined footage would then have had to be bounced back by satellite to the various broadcasters around the world. On top of this, both artists objected to the idea of miming at what was perceived as a historic event. McCartney agreed to perform and has said it was "the management" — his children — who persuaded him to take part. In the event, he was the last performer aside from the Band Aid finale to take to the stage and one of the few to be beset by technical difficulties; his microphone failed for the first two minutes of his piano performance of " Let It Be ", making it difficult for television viewers and impossible for those in the stadium to hear him.
On the Concorde flight, Collins encountered actress and singer Cher , who was unaware of the concerts. Unfortunately, in the rush to set up the transatlantic feeds, the sound feed from Philadelphia was sent to London via transatlantic cable, while the video feed was via satellite, which meant a lack of synchronisation on British television receivers. An entirely separate and simultaneous US feed was provided for cable viewers by MTV , whose broadcast was presented in stereo, and accessible as such for those with stereo televisions. At the time, before multichannel television sound was enacted nationwide, very few televisions reproduced stereo signals and few television stations were able to broadcast in stereo. As a result, many songs were omitted due to the commercial breaks, as these songs were played during these slots. In 1995, VH1 and MuchMusic aired a re-edited ten-hour re-broadcast of the concert for its 10th anniversary.
The Live Aid concert in London was also the first time that the BBC outside broadcast sound equipment had been used for an event of such scale. In stark contrast to the mirrored sound systems commonly used by the rock band touring engineers, with two 40—48-channel mixing consoles at the front of house and another pair for monitors, the BBC sound engineers had to use multiple 12-channel desks. Some credit this as the point where the mainstream entertainment industry realised that the rock concert industry had overtaken them in technical expertise. He stopped just after the line "The lesson today is how to die" to loud applause.
